woohoo, two of my patent applications finally got published :) now i just need to wait another few years for them to be rejected, and a little while after that for IBM to rebut the objections and get them accepted...

WTF, mate? [02 Mar 2007|09:46pm]
I swear, I think I've gotten about 10 solicitations from MIT for money in the past month. Couple letters, whole bunch of emails. I wonder how long it will take to train the Gmail spam filters to recognize donation requests as spam. I'm a little surprised I didn't have to pass President Hockfield a $20 bill at graduation to actually get my diploma, given how desparate the Institute seems to be for cash.

It had to happen eventually...I think I just felt my first earthquake. It was rather anticlimatic.

a variety of things [14 Feb 2007|09:24pm]
a veritable smorgasbord since I hardly post on LJ

I love being able to bike into work, so much so that when the forecast said partly cloudy on monday, I biked in. Turned out I lost that gamble because it was raining pretty good when I left work that night. It was actually pretty nice until I had to stop at a light to cross a street, and after that it was just cold. I didn't have too far to go though and a hot shower made me feel much better.

Shows I'm making time to watch:
Studio 60 - of course. It started off slow but I'm really liking it now. Matthew Perry, Bradley Whitford, and Amanda Peet have really settled into their roles and the rest of the cast is great too. I wish Timothy Busfield had more on-air time though; I miss Danny from the West Wing.

BSG - although I'm really hoping for more action soon. I want explosions and vipers in dogfights and less of this sappy romantic stuff - Studio 60 does that better and funnier.

Sports Night on DVD. Rougher and a bit of a precursor to some of the plots in Sorkin's later work, but still funny. It feels a bit strange ending after only a half hour but I can just play another commercial free episode.

Shows I'm occasionally watching:
The Unit - Summer Glau has a small part in this...and she's not crazy martial arts girl.
The Sarah Silverman Show - very hit or miss

I've got a Macbook Pro from work but my personal Thinkpad is 5 years old and I'm thinking about splurging on a new personal Macbook Pro.

College Prep [27 Jan 2007|09:22am]
I'm a little behind the times and only now found out about the lawsuit between Calvary Chapel Christian School and the University of California (or perhaps I found out about it at the time and forgot?). It seems that UC refused to accept a biology course at CCCS as appropriate preparation for college (while accepting other courses) because the course's primary textbook does not teach valid scientific method. CCCS claimed religious discrimination and sued. I find myself wondering if MIT does any kind of high school course auditing or has given any thought to it.

I had alligator for lunch a couple days ago. I thought they were joking when I saw it on the menu, but it turns out they weren't so much.

I got a new digital camera, so I've been taking plenty of pictures of nothing special. Today's cool picture of the day seems pretty cool to me at least:
silver line and the sox

Science of Sleep [03 Apr 2006|09:04pm]
So Michel Gondry just showed his new movie The Science of Sleep today. I found it sad, repetitious, and weird (but not in the good weird way I found Eternal Sunshine). I kept wanting it to go somewhere; I'm not sure where. Parts of it were funny, but I mostly just felt unsatisfied.

So as I was walking over to a meeting after class, I saw a train going through building 46. It was a very cool sight to see and made me wish once again I had a good digital camera.

crisis averted [28 Feb 2006|05:14pm]
As much as option (e) appealed to me, I sucked it up and ordered the replacement part from IBM yesterday. It got here today and after downloading the hardware maintainence documents, I popped out the old fan and dumped in the new one. I was very impressed with how easy it is to swap parts in a Thinkpad, as well as how convenient the documentation is. I've been less than impressed with Lenovo's ability to ship machines after they managed to not ship one to my Dad for 5 months, but IBM was on the ball with the replacement part.

sadness [27 Feb 2006|08:22am]
Well, it looks like my laptop is halfway dead. By which I mean it's dead, but probably repairable. Since it's out of warranty, it's unclear to me how much that might cost. On that note, it seems like my options now are:
a) suck it up, take the time and money to get it serviced
b) buy/find an old thinkpad that I can just drop my old hard drive into
c) buy a new spiffy laptop that will last me for years and years (or possibly year and year, judging by how long this one lasted)
d) buy/find a cheap new powerful desktop that will last me for year and year but be cheaper and more powerful than a comparable laptop

Thoughts?

Somebody needs to make a snooze button for fire alarms. I'm pretty sure I could make it out the window before anything really bad happened, anyways.

So I counted it up after I got back to Boston on the red eye this morning, and it looks like I've flown something like 21,000 miles over the past four months, hit 7 airports 16 times, and worn a suit on to a flight because I didn't have time to change. Traveling is fun :) although it makes getting work for my classes done much harder.

Even after saying I wasn't going to be involved, and trying to tell as many people as possible that I wasn't going to be involved to force myself to stay out of it, I got involved in Star Wars. Two quotes have made it somewhat worth it:
"You guys are fucking insane" from a friend after seeing the set, and
"Oooooooooooooh" after Alex and I stealth-plugged in the star drop. Heather, you probably hate us now, but it was so awesome to hear the instant reaction from the audience.

The Corpse Bride is excellent (even if I keep on typing it in as 'bridge' for some strange reason). I didn't realize it was so much of a musical though. Only a couple songs I think, but still surprising.

I'm in Texas right now. Hopefully I won't be in Texas tomorrow night. Rita is looming, which makes things unclear. Grabbed dinner with a fellow Extreme Blue alum from Raleigh who goes to UT-Austin, and also ran into another EB alum from two years ago, also Raleigh, who is now working for IBM full time on the flight from Boston to Washington.
